Ten Myths About Kids Beds Bunk That Aren’t Always True
Kids Beds Bunk
Bunk beds provide drama to children’s rooms and provide an excitement. To make bunk beds more appealing to children Ms. Keenan often includes a bookcase or a reading lamp in every sleeping space.
Many of our beds for kids can be converted into two twin beds in one, perfect if you plan to move your children to their own bedrooms in the near future. Choose from finishes such as brushed gray, cream white, and rich walnut.
Stairs and ladders
When you are choosing a bunk bed for your kids, you have the option to select between ladders or stairs. Ladders are less expensive and simple to put in and offer an easy way to climb into the bed at the top. They are also considered to be safer than stairs, since they have a bigger surface for children to walk on and a handrail built-in. Ladders also tend to have grooves in the steps which can prevent slippage while climbing up or down the bed.
If you prefer the style and appearance of stairs, they could be an elegant addition to your bunk bed. Staircases are also ideal for rooms that are tight on space, as they don’t protrude into the space like ladders do. They are usually made of metal or wood and can be a great match for various styles of bedrooms. Some staircases even include integrated storage drawers, bunkbedsstore.uk which are an excellent way to add more space to the bunk bed.
When choosing between a ladder and stairs take into account the age of your child. While it is recommended that nobody sleep on the top bunk under the age of 6, children who are comfortable with climbing vertically might be better off using stairs than a ladder. In addition when you’re thinking of using your bunk bed as guest beds for smaller children or adults who have mobility issues, stairs are the preferred option.
A straight staircase on the side of the bed will require 95″ of space on either side. If you don’t have enough space, you can opt for the u-shaped stairs that does not require as much space but allows you to get access to the top bunk in a safe and safely. Some beds have the option of removing the stairs when they’re not in use, which further reduces their footprint and makes them more versatile for rooms that can be used in multiple ways. There are also staircases that connect to the bottom of the bed and eliminate the requirement for a separate handrail and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
Guard Rails
Guard rails give kids the confidence and the freedom to climb into and out of bed independently. They must be set in a proper way to ensure that there aren’t any gaps or loosening in between the guardrails and the frame of the bed. If you choose to use guard rails, be sure to follow the directions of the manufacturer and examine them on a regular basis for any looseness or holes which could cause the entrapment.
One of the most important safety considerations for bunk beds is to ensure they are kept away from electrical devices and other objects that could be projectiles if your children play or sleep. Set bunk beds far from windows to avoid a potential fall hazard if your children get up on the top level.
You might want to put a nightlight on the ladder to light the way up and down when your child awakes at night to use the bathroom, or are woken by an erupting storm and have to leave their bedroom.
A safety net could be placed on top of the bunk to prevent children from falling off while they are sleeping or playing. This is a great idea, particularly for older children who are more likely to sleep on the top bunk.
The guardrails must be securely attached to the bunk beds and can’t be removed without tools. The guardrail openings above the mattress base should not be larger than 3.5 inches wide to avoid entrapment or strangulation. To test this, insert the wedge block shown in Figure 1 into each opening in the lower edge of the uppermost member of the guardrail and above the underside of the mattress foundation. Then apply a 33-lbf (147-N) force in a perpendicular direction to the plane of the large end of the block, and maintain it for a period of 1 minute.
It’s also an excellent idea to instruct kids not to hang things on the ladders or guardrails, like clothing, belts and sports equipment. Instead a clothes rack should be used to ensure that these items don’t become a strangulation hazard for your child(ren). Also, ensure that more than one child does not sleep on the top floor of the bunk as this could cause a dangerous imbalance which may result in falls.
Mattresses
When selecting a mattress for bunk beds, take into account the size of your child and their age. A bunk mattress will last for at least eight years or until siblings no longer share a bedroom, so you’ll want to pick one that’s designed to expand with your child while still providing adequate support as they get older.
Bunk mattress sizes are typically twin or full-size, and there are a variety of options that can fit either. If your children suffer from allergies or asthma, opt for an allergy-free mattress with a dust mite barrier as well as a cover that wicks moisture. A mattress with an antimicrobial layer will protect the foam against harmful bacteria and germs.
Another crucial aspect to consider is the mattress’s feel. Kids are usually lighter than adults and need mattresses that are firm, but also comfortable. Many hybrid and latex mattresses have a firm side and a soft side to accommodate both children’s needs.
Memory foam mattresses can be a great choice for children however they’re not our first choice since they can trap heat and may be too hard on young spines. Consider a hybrid or a latex mattress that provides solid support and cooling infusions for your child or guests to sleep comfortably.
A mattress with a low profile is typically the best option for kids bunk beds. These are designed to be smaller than regular mattresses and to increase safety rail height for the top bunk. They also eliminate “filler” materials to offer the highest quality in a slim design.
If your child is looking to try a mattress more hefty than a regular bed, consider an hybrid or innerspring mattress with upper comfort layers that can be removed or replaced as your child develops. These models can provide you with an idea of the longevity of the mattress as your child grows. You can also put in a mattress skirt or bed pad to prevent it from sliding. Some beds have side rails or lip built-in to prevent this.
Storage
Bunk beds are an excellent way to save space in shared rooms for kids. They can also be an affordable alternative to buying two separate single beds. A lot of bunks have the option to add a trundle that can be tucked under the bottom bunk when not in use.
Consider putting up a kids’ bedroom furniture combination set that includes bookcases, desks, and/or dressers to maximize storage space in a room with a bunk bed. This will allow you to keep all of your child’s clothes as well as toys and personal belongings in one location instead of stuffing everything into overstuffed chests or closets. These kids bedroom furniture sets are available from a variety of retailers and generally meet all federal safety standards.
Stacked bunks can become an ideal playground for the imagination as kids can transform the space beneath into cozy hidden play areas and hideaway spaces. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked 6 bunks in this room for the ultimate space for kids that can be used for playing, sleeping and even superhero cape twirls. The room is decorated with a bubble wallcovering from Chasing Paper, and the ceiling is painted Benjamin Moore Blue Jean.
If you cannot install an stairwell to your bunk beds then a ladder is an option. The ladders are constructed with a combination of Single Socket Tee Flange, Single Socket Tee and 90 Degree Side Outlet Tee fittings. They can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between rungs of a ladder to make it easier for toddlers to climb. The ladder rungs can also be placed in a straight line with the ground rather than higher, to make climbing easier.
Another method to maximize space in a room that has bunk beds is to put up loft beds for kids that can be lowered down to just above the floor. This lets you slide desks, dressers and toy chests under the beds. This is an excellent way to maximize the space in smaller bedrooms, or in large family homes where beds have to be capable of accommodating multiple sleepers.
